Sometimes you may feel like you never need to leave Austin.  We’ve got tacos, Barton Springs and live music everywhere, what else do you need?  However, Austin is surrounded by the beauty of the Hill Country and you’re really doing yourself a disservice if you don’t get out there and enjoy it.  So grab some friends and hit the road to experience the world outside of Austin!
Fredericksburg is a lovely little town 78 miles and about an hour and a half west of Austin on Highway 290.  Fredericksburg was settled by German immigrants and retains much of that original culture.
For years, Fredericksburg attracted visitors drawn by its tasty German food and beer, plus collection of eclectic stores that line Main Street.  However, recently Fredericksburg has become the epicenter for a Winery Renaissance.  There are a variety of wineries around Fredericksburg including Becker VineyardsLewis Wines, and Pedernales Cellars to name just a small percentage of the vast number available.  You can even get a shuttle so everyone in your party can safely enjoy the offerings at each location.
Looking for authentic German fare?  The Altdorf Bier Garden is a lovely place to enjoy a tasty German beer and some sausage or Schnitzel.  Their German Potato Salad is also not to be missed!
Shopping more your bag?  Main Street has something for everyone in your party, from antiques to toys to hot sauce to clothing, purses and accessories.  There’s even a store where you can get everything your pet needs!  Called Dogologie, you can get an outfit for your pet, specialty foods, and a bumper sticker declaring the breed of your dog is the best!
There’s lots more to experience in Fredericksburg, so why not make it your destination this weekend?
