Fan Fest Shows Off Austin’s Downtown

Fan Fest proved to be popular with visitors and Austinites, children and parents, and “old dudes” and University of Texas students, Statesman.com reported.  Austinites love a free party, and this weekend’s Fan Fest was no exception.
The Formula One Fan Fest shut down several streets downtown for music, as well as a giant slide, bouncy castles sponsored by Fiesta, and Hot Wheels races.  Saturday saw absolutely beautiful weather, and it brought out families in droves.  Parents talked about how much their children enjoyed activities such as painting tires and racing the toy cars.  Even adults enjoyed racing toy cars electronically and a bungee jumping simulator.
For those looking for more sophisticated pursuits, The Art of Fifth Gallery put on an art display and a street artist used a large box as a canvas to spray paint race cars and drivers.  Entrepreneurs made money selling everything from t-shirts to ball caps to snacks.
As evening fell, the crowd swelled with F1 fans leaving the qualifying trials for a chance to see what our city has to offer.  Formula One fans from Australia to Brazil gushed about how much they loved Austin’s hospitality, food and festivities.  They vowed to come back next year.
The only complainers seemed to be some UT students who were a little surprised that the “rich guys around here who love cars” they came for turned out to be a little too old for their tastes.  Luckily, they still had fun despite the fact they didn’t find dates.
