Dogs need stuff too, and now they can get it out of trailers, just like their human counterparts. In dog-obsessed Austin, it was only a matter of time before someone thought to use the trailers that have been so popular serving human food to bring stuff to pets. Two Austin entrepreneurs turned their love for their pets into businesses, Statesman.com reports.
The Great OutDogs was started by Matt Edwards to sell eco-friendly outdoor gear for dogs. The mobile trailer is usually parked at Auditorium Shores, and users of the dog park there can just follow the yellow-paw-path to the store. Edwards sells 1,300 products like tug-and-fetch toys made from recycled materials and locally-made organic treats from Healthy Hound.
Edwards transformed a tool truck into The Great OutDogs with the goal to allow people to buy something and then use it immediately with their dog. He was inspired to enter the industry when he saw that the lucrative outdoor dog product market wasn’t being served locally and he also wants to combat the rising obesity epidemic in dogs. So far the truck is doing extremely well, selling about $500 worth of merchandise in just the first two hours of business on a Friday morning recently. Edwards ultimately wants to turn the Great OutDogs into a franchise.
Businesswoman Lara Enzor was inspired to open Bow-Wow Chow after enjoying food at one of Austin’s food trailer parks and thinking that dogs needed the same experience. Enzor sells dog treats in very little to no packaging to be environmentally friendly and prices them from $1 with a bottle of water for one all natural, preservative free and locally made treat, to six treats for $3.
Enzor transformed a Florida snow cone truck into a “ice cream truck for dogs” with a Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine inspired scene done by Full Moon Design and illustrated with pictures of her own dogs. She donates part of every sale to local rescue groups. Enzor has taken the truck to Norwood Estate dog park, at meetups and special events and to Auditorium Shores.
