3 Absolutely Necessary Tips for Growing Herbs Indoors

Growing herbs indoors means you always have seasonings on hand for your recipes.  And if you live in anapartment, it’s an absolutely necessity.  However, it can be a tricky business, so the Kitchn helps you make sure you’re successful!
The first ingredient that herbs need to thrive is sun.  Herbs require at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight every day to grow indoors.  If you don’t have a space where the sun can provide rays directly to your plants, there is no point to going to the trouble of trying to make them live, they won’t make it.
The second element necessary for your herbs to be their best is to be sure the roots have proper drainage.  During the winter when plants are indoors rather than outside in the heat, they take in water slightly slower.  To keep roots from rotting or sitting in water, you need to make sure you have put drain holes into the bottom of your containers and put rocks or plastic foam at the bottom of your pot.
Finally, the largest leaves on your herbs serve as their “solar panels”, soaking up the most sun.  If you just cut off the biggest leaves, your plant won’t be able to grow very well.  So when you prune leaves off, cut some mature and some newer leaves, but never cut off all the leaves at one go.
That’s it.  Happy growing!
