Sunset Valley

This month, we’ll be spotlighting the Sunset Valley neighborhood of Austin, Texas.  This tiny community is surrounded by Austin and is only one square mile.  It is popular with Sunset Valley residents and Austinites because of its proximity to Austin and its wealth of shops and restaurants.
Although the first land transaction in Sunset Valley happened in 1835, the community wasn’t developed until the 1950’s, when Clarence and M.H. Flournoy bought a large tract of land to build a residential subdivision.  The land was a wooded valley surrounded by rolling hills on the western edge of Austin, so it was dubbed “Sunset Valley”.  Sunset Valley was incorporated as a city in 1954 and set up a mayor/council form of government.
Sunset Valley remains a rural community, and has acres of conservation space for plants and animals.
