Construction will start at the beginning of next year on a community of 260 micro-unit apartments at East Fifth and Waller Streets. Community Impact reports that the community will be called Spire.
Micro-units are typically less than 400 square feet and are gaining popularity as city dwellers look for more affordable options for housing. Spire will be a mixed-use building and will have about 6,500 square feet of retail and live-work space, as well as an underground parking garage.
The project will include affordable housing, with about 25 percent of the units set aside for Austinites who earn 50 to 70 percent less than Austin’s median family income.
The project plans to follow the Plaza Saltillo Transit-Oriented Development master plan. A completion date has not been announced.
