Austinites have tons of fun activities to choose from for the holidays. Here’s a round-up of some of the fun stuff you can get up to to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year in the ATX!
The Zilker Christmas Tree is celebrating its 50th year and is already up and lit. You can view the majesty of its 3,309 lights through December 31st from 6pm to midnight every night. The Trail of Lights opens December 10th and runs through December 23rd and is a great activity for the whole family. There are a variety of admission levels from basic through Platinum, and you can purchase parking or a shuttle pass also through the site.
The 2nd Street District has a ton of holiday events in December, including the Holiday Window Walk where art students from area colleges decorate shop windows and compete for scholarships for the best window. On December 8th, there will be a Sip and Stroll from 6 to 8pm with cocktails in the Downtown AMLI lobby, and raffles and giveaways at area businesses. Santa Lounge at 3Ten is December 10th from 12-5pm and is a chance to get a photo with Santa, hot cocoa, sweet treats and more!
Sad because there’s never snow in Austin for the holidays? Well there are plenty of places where you can pretend you’re in a winter wonderland! Check out this round-up for details on where you can enjoy the wintry white stuff in Austin, Round Rock, and other surrounding towns!
Holiday shopping is a lot more fun in Austin at the local craft and holiday fairs that return year after year. Also, way less holiday stress! Cherrywood Art Fair is at Maplewood Elementary on Saturday December 10th and Sunday December 11th from 11am to 5pm. There will be local artisans selling their wares, music, kids activities, and food in a free, family-friendly environment.
Blue Genie Art Bazaar is open daily through December 24th 10am to 10pm and is located on Airport Boulevard. Free admission, free parking, refreshments, and lots of really cool gift items have made Blue Genie a popular destination for Christmas shopping for 16 years!
The Thinkery offers the opportunity to make Gingerbread Houses and keep the mess out of your house! Be sure to reserve your seat to make a traditional gingerbread house and enjoy the best children’s museum around!
Nothing gets you in the holiday spirit like singing Christmas Carols, and one of the best places to do it is at the Holiday Sing-along and Downtown Stroll at the Capitol! This year’s festivities kick off at 6pm at the Capitol as KUTX’s John Aielli leads the crowds in a giant caroling extravaganza. Afterwards, from 7pm to 9pm, take a walk down Congress Avenue to enjoy live music and shops, galleries and museums that are open late and providing special activities.
