Being on Good Terms with your Apartment Neighbors

Just moved into your first apartment?  Or maybe you’ve been at this for a while, but have had bad relationships with neighbors in the past.  Check out About.com’s tips on having a good relationship with your apartment neighbors.
First, be polite.  If you’re more of an introvert, it may be hard to talk to every single person you pass in the hallway, but make an effort to smile and to return any good mornings with a hello.  You don’t want your neighbors to think you’re rude or ignoring them, or you’ll just make future encounters awkward.
Be courteous to your fellow apartment dwellers. If someone does a favor for you, such as picking up your mail while you’re on vacation, be sure to show your appreciation with a small gift from where you went or some homemade cookies.  Also, offer to return the favor when they go out of town.
Hosting neighbors for a small gathering in your apartment is a great way to make them feel welcome and help everyone get to know one another.
If a neighbor says something you don’t agree with, especially in the realm of politics, try to ignore it.  It’s best to look the other way and not let minor disagreements turn into a fight with people you have to encounter every day.
Even if you do become friends with a person in your complex, be careful about rushing things or becoming overly familiar.  Set boundaries or else you may find yourself the unwilling recipient of a daily visitor, or vice versa!
