Austin’s Public Transportation Plan

The Austin Monitor reports that the Austin City Council was given a presentation on the Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s plan for long-term service.

The new plan, called Connections 2025, is designed to increase the frequency of service as well as where it is offered,  with the goal of increasing the number of residents who live within a 10 minute walk of a bus or train that comes every quarter hour or less

Some council members, including Ora Houston and Leslie Pool, both expressed concern that there were not more park and ride options, particularly in Houston’s district at the MLK Station and Pool’s district at the Crestview Station.

The Cap Metro representative responded that best practices nationally are focused on development that is transit-oriented so people live near public transportation, rather than having to drive and park to take it.  Also, building parking is the most expensive part of  public transportation infrastructure.

Both Houston and Pool said that they could not take the train to City Hall because there was no where to park near it in their neighborhoods.

The discussion turned to how to attract employers out of downtown to the periphery of the city, where workers are already living.  28.8 percent of jobs in the Austin metro area are located within 3 miles of the central business district, while over 50% of homes are being built more than 20 miles from downtown.
