78746 residents have donated almost $1 million to the 2012 presidential candidates, Statesman.com reports. The affluent ZIP code includes West Lake Hills, Rollingwood, and parts of West Austin.
President Obama, as the recipient of $438,000 this election cycle, received the most from 78746 residents, but if all the GOP candidates are lumped together, their take surpasses Obama’s. The split isn’t surprising. In 2008, voting over the 22-square-mile area was fairly evenly divided between Obama and John McCain.
The area gave 66 times more than the average ZIP code in the country. Residents in 78746 also gave $2.6 million to the national parties, political action committees and candidates for Congress. The median family income in that area is more than $150,000 a year, making it “the most affluent ZIP code in Central Texas” and a regular location of political fundraisers.
Texas’ other top three ZIP codes for political contributions all gave more to Romney than Obama. They were the Hedwig Village area of Houston, Houston’s 77019, which includes River Oaks, and Dallas’ 75205, aka Highland Park. The numbers were compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonprofit that keeps tabs on campaign finances.
