It’s been over three years since we explored the Sunset Valley neighborhood of Austin, Texas. Let’s see what’s changed and developed in this little one square mile town that’s surrounded by Austin.
The community was developed in the 1950’s, when Clarence and M.H. Flournoy bought land there to build a residential subdivision. The land was called Sunset Valley because it was a wooded valley surrounded by rolling hills on the western edge of Austin. It was incorporated as a city in 1954.
Children attend schools in the Austin Independent School District. For grades kindergarten through fifth, students go to Sunset Valley Elementary, whose mascot is the Jaguars. Sunset Valley has a Dual Language program where students learn in both English and Spanish.
For grades six through eight, residents go to Covington Middle School, which was recently designated as a Fine Arts Academy and whose mascot is the Colt.
Residents in grades nine through twelve attend Crockett High School, whose mascot is the Cougars. Crockett was named an “Outstanding High Schools that Work” School.
There are several employers near Sunset Valley, plus it is located just eight miles from downtown, making it convenient to many different companies. Arrive Logistics is a broker between freight companies and businesses that need to ship products. They employ over 70 people in their office just eight minutes from Sunset Valley, with plans to add as many as 100 more jobs in the next year.
NXP Semiconductors, Inc. is a Dutch-based semiconductor company with offices around the globe, including their Austin office nine minutes from Sunset Valley. They employ about 5,000 employees in a variety of positions at that office.
At the heart of Sunset Valley is a giant shopping center, so restaurants and stores are in ample supply. Cane Rosso is a new addition to the area and comes to Austin by way of Dallas, (they also have two locations in Houston). They serve authentic Neapolitan style pizza in a wood-fired oven straight from Italy.
Coriander Indian Cuisine brings delicious, authentic Indian food to Sunset Valley. They have both delicious dishes and a lunch buffet so you can sample a little bit of everything if you like!
For shopping, Total Wine and More has an incredible selection of wine, beer, and spirits all at amazingly low prices. If you’d rather not leave the house, they even deliver through Instacart!
Nordstrom Rack has a location in Sunset Valley and is a great place to get a deal on high end clothing and accessories. This where where the inventory from Nordstrom goes when it doesn’t sell and gets deeply discounted, so you can enjoy quality without the drain on your pocketbook.
