Office Chairs: How to Take a Test Drive Before You Buy

Buying an office chair is probably more important than buying a car.  After all, you’ll probably spend way more time sitting in your office chair than in your car.  So to make sure you get the chair that will keep you comfy while you work, follow Apartment Therapy’s tips for how to properly take a test drive in your potential chair.
First of all, sit in it.  This may sound obvious, but a lot of people skip this step.  Test out whether you can adjust the height of the chair so your knees can be at a 90 degree angle with your feet flat on the floor.  Is your back properly supported when you sit comfortably in the chair?  If the answer is no, move on to another chair.  You should easily be able to sit in your office chair with perfect posture.
Feel the fabric to make sure it’s breathable and can be cleaned easily.  You should read the tag to see what materials it’s made of.  You’re going to be sitting in your chair for hours and hours so you don’t want to have a chair upholstered in fake, uncomfortable materials.
Finally, if your chair has the ability to swivel, be sure it’s easy to turn from left to right, but not so wobbly  you can’t sit in one place.  Some chairs have an adjustable swivel, so if that’s something you desire, be sure to check for that feature.
Check on the return policy before you make your purchase.  It can be difficult to know if a chair is right for you until you’ve sat in it for an entire day, so ask if you can return it if you don’t like it, even if it’s been used.  Be sure to hold on to your receipt in case you need to take the chair back or it malfunctions.
