South Austinites, get ready for SoChaca, the name of a new merchants’ group that is also trying to form a business district in far south Austin. Community Impact reports on the development in the area.
The territory of “SoChaca” is Manchaca Road from Slaughter Lane to FM 1626. Development continues in the area, with South Austin Beer Garden currently under construction at 17000 Manchaca Road. The plan is to turn the 1920’s house into a bar with Texas beers on tap and have a covered pavilion, music stage and food trailers on the rest of the one acre property. It’s set to open this Fall.
Manchaca Plaza is another new development that will be several buildings ranging from 2,000 to 10,000 square feet on 6.5 acres. A finish date is not set.
Other recent additions to the area include the bar Indian Roller at 10006 Manchaca Road. It opened last fall. The 8 acre property plans to add a wine and coffee bar next year and a rock music venue named She Wolf in 2017.
Moontower Saloon, which opened in 2012, was the one of the first bars in the area and has been constantly expanding, adding parking, decks, volleyball courts and more. Their plan is to begin work on a 10,000 square foot dance hall next year.
Other local businesses that have joined the SoChaca Business Owners Group are Austin Roller rink, Johnny G’s Meat Market, and other restaurants and bars. The goal is to make area residents aware of the businesses that are on their doorstep so they don’t have to travel out of their neighborhood for goods and services.
